I've only played 4 and I have a copy of 2 on it's way. I hear 2 is the best though.

That's because 2 had a fuckton of new content added relative to the first.

I have 2 and 3 (both vanilla and Pirate's Moon), and played some 4.

Not sure if the Mechcommander series counts, though.
