Should I Reinstall?
« on: December 18, 2008, 10:47:35 AM »
So basically my computer has been acting wonky, not wanting to turn on very well unless it's plugged in and since I installed Symantec the host or whatever has been disabling/shutting down/whatever the term is a bunch of processes, all random, from stuff dealing with McAfee to well, just about anything minus explorer or anything I'm working on. It doesn't really affect the computer's ability to work that I can tell but it still kind of bothers me that a bunch of shit will randomly shut down or whatever. Should I just uninstall Symantec and try again (or leave it off completely) or reinstall Windows Vista? Or is there something else I can do which will help identify exactly what it is?

And before I get shit about having Vista, yes, I will have to reinstall VISTA if I have to reinstall and no I can't install XP and no I'm not going to buy XP. If I reinstall, I'm reinstalling Vista.

In my honest, and probably not to respected, opinion I'd said firstly, ditch Symantec and avoid McAfee, they both are crap. Use AVG. I've also heard Avast! is quite good. Personally the programs as far as 'defense' go are; Peer Guardian, Ad-Aware, and AVG (Also, browser-wise, I use No Script and Ad Blocker Plus Plug-ins for Firefox v3.). I'd at least try to uninstall McAfee/Symantec and install AVG or Avast!, if that fails format and reinstall your OS.

Also, have you ran McAfee/Symantec to see if maybe you picked up a virus or something and that's ending the processes?

Well McAfee is shit. It scans and says, "Look you have cookies! Cookies must be bad!" but I can't "fix" the problem without me paying for stuff (and I quite regularly clear all my cookies anyway so...) and Symantec doesn't pick up anything. Neither does Spybot Search and Destroy. I can run a scan again and tell you what I find, if anything, though.

Sorry to double post, but I ran a full scan on Symantec and Spybot, and nothing came up on either scan.

gotta agree with kratos... Symantec and McAfee should both be wiped off of the surface of the earth... personally, i'm using Avast!, and that's what i usually recommend for people with Virus/adware/spyware/other infections, or if they're just plain annoyed by the limitations of their own antivirus... so that's my recommendation for you too... :)

oh, and once you install Avast! you will get the option to schedule a boot-time scan and restart the computer...

and the best part... it's free XD

I honestly don't think my problem is a virus, but I'll go ahead and try it.

I think this is not OS or virus related. Something tells me you had another AV programme installed before, and now your current one is fighting. What did you have installed before? If you're going to run an AV programme, go with Avast. Shit, Clam is better than Symmantec.

I'm worried about your computer shutting down random processes. Run a HijackThis scan, and post it here.

I finally listened to some of The Cardigans. They're surprisingly tolerable, and that goes against my policy of only having horrible music acts in my avatar, so out they go.

Instead, enjoy the cunt from No Doubt.

Oh, and LOL: I fucking hate poutine.

Probably true, but the time required to fix that sort of a problem (and prevent a recurrence) is likely better spent just paving it.

Also, I have McAfee on here, but I can't fix problems, only find them. It does offer protection from stuff though. Other than Spybot I don't have anything else though.

EDIT: I'm going to go for any kind of temporary solution, and then I'll pave after my parents leave for Germany. That way my dad is in no way involved in the reinstillation process. He knows what he's talking about with computers but it just gets messy when we work together.

I don't know how the fuck to read one of them logs, but at this point, arcive anything SUPER IMPORTANT (I.E. irreplaceable), pave it, setup Vista with AVG or Avast! (Probably also some kinda of Mal-ware protection, as suggested earlier, I used Peer Guardian and SpyBot, and sometimes, Ad-Aware. All that is HARDLY needed, but I am a precautions person).

Scan your archive with AVG (I'm pretty damn sure Avast! sure be about to do that too), if it comes off clean, unarchive it, continue.

If you archive is under 2Mb you can upload it to www.ripway.com but you do need to register there, but it is also free, and I have never been spammed by them, in almost six months.

...PeerGuardian isn't an anti-malware program.
